What you need

Step 1: Everybody tees off
Every player on the team hits a tee shot before anyone decides on a plan. In a typical 4-person scramble, that means four different drives to compare on every hole.
At an X-Golf simulator bay, the auto-tee system remembers each player’s tee height and resets it automatically between turns. Nobody stops to re-tee manually, so the group keeps moving from one shot to the next.
Step 2: Pick the best shot
After everyone tees off, the team compares where the shots landed and picks the one shot everyone will play from next. The longest drive isn’t always the right call: a 260-yard drive in a virtual bunker plays worse than a 220-yard drive sitting clean in the fairway, and the team that weighs position over distance usually posts the better score.
Whatever lie the team picks is the lie everyone plays from. X-Golf’s simulator scores each lie the way a real course would:

- rough: a 10 percent penalty
- bunker: a 50 percent penalty
Step 3: Play from that spot
Once the team picks a shot, every player plays their next stroke from that same spot. Outdoors, that means marking the spot with a tee or coin and placing each ball within one club length, staying in the same type of lie.
On the simulator, the software takes care of that whole process. It sets up everyone’s next shot from the chosen lie, and nobody has to measure or mark a ball by hand. This is what makes a scramble a team format instead of four separate rounds: everybody hits from the group’s best, shot after shot.
Step 4: Repeat until it’s holed
Keep picking the best shot and playing from there until the ball goes in the hole. That includes approach shots and chips, not just the tee shot.
On the green, the same process applies. Everyone putts from the same read, the team picks the best result, and anyone still away plays from that spot until the ball drops.
Step 5: Record the team score
Write down one score for the team, based on the number of shots it took to hole out, then move to the next tee. If your team took a 3, that’s what goes on the scorecard, regardless of who made the putt.
Because the team always plays from its best shot, scramble scores run low. It’s common for a team to finish 12 to 18 strokes under par for 18 holes, well below what most players shoot on their own.
